Algunas personas me preguntaron cómo aplicar a la lotería de la Maratón de Nueva York, carrera que se correrá en noviembre 1 de 2020. La Maratón de Nueva York hace parte de los seis majors y es la más grande del mundo cuando se mide por el número de participantes: 53.640 personas la terminaron en el 2019.
Lo primero que debes hacer, es tener a la mano tu tarjeta de crédito. Si los dioses del atletismo sonríen a tu favor y resultas elegido en el sorteo del 26 de febrero, el sistema automáticamente hace un cargo a tu tarjeta. El costo de participar en la carrera para los no residentes en Estados Unidos es de US$ 358. El ingreso a la lotería no tiene costo.
Para participar, debes ingresar a la página de la lotería para el 2020: nyrr.org/races/2020tcsnewyorkcitymarathon. Allí, debes hacer click sobre el botón azul "APPLY".
Si es la primera vez que participas en la lotería, debes crear una cuenta. Si has participado antes, ya debes tener una cuenta y sólo debes ingresar el usuario y la clave. En caso de no recordar tu clave, hay una opción que te permite recuperarla.
Una vez ingresas con tu usuario y clave, tienes tres opciones para participar: por medio de la lotería, por invitación de la organización o un patrocinador, y a través de la opción de recoger fondos (fundraising) a favor de NYRR Team For Kids. La opción que vamos a revisar es la de la lotería, que es la que toma la mayoría de las personas. Nuevamente, haz click sobre el botón azul "APPLY".
Para avanzar, debes dar tu visto bueno a dos condiciones: la primera dice que estás de acuerdo en aplicar una única vez a la lotería. La segunda dice que eres consciente de que, si eres aceptado y tu estado como miembro de New York Road Runners (NYRR) cambia entre el momento de aplicación y el de aceptación, el cargo a tu tarjeta se hará de acuerdo a tu estado de membresía en ese momento. Una vez haces click sobre "I HAVE READ AND AGREE", en la siguiente página debes hacer click sobre "CONTINUE TO CHECKOUT".
En la siguiente pantalla, debes seleccionar las opciones que aplican según tu caso:
- Indicar si el registro es para ti, para tus hijos o para ambos.
- Indicar el tiempo esperado para terminar la carrera.
- Indicar si has corrido una maratón o media maratón no organizada por NYRR en los últimos dos años (si es así, debes ingresar el enlace con tu resultado).
- Tu equipo (solo equipos de EE.UU.).
- La talla de tu camisa.
- Indicar si eres un atleta con alguna discapacidad.
- Llenar una corta encuesta.
Luego debes aceptar las condiciones de la organización y la carrera, y hacer click sobre "CONTINUE TO CHECKOUT". En la siguiente pantalla, puedes hacer una donación a NYRR si lo deseas. Si quieres convertirte en miembro de NYRR, puedes hacerlo o saltar ese paso.
Si toda la información está completa, haz click sobre "PROCEED TO CHECKOUT", ingresa los datos de tu tarjeta de crédito y haz click en "PLACE YOUR ORDER". Así quedará confirmado tu ingreso a la lotería y al sorteo del 26 de febrero.

Some people asked me how to apply to the New York City Marathon lottery — the race that was scheduled for November 1, 2020. The NYC Marathon is one of the six World Marathon Majors and the largest in the world by number of participants: 53,640 people finished it in 2019.
The first thing you need to do is have your credit card ready. If the running gods smile upon you and you're selected in the February 26 draw, the system will automatically charge your card. The entry fee for non-US residents is US$358. Entering the lottery itself is free.
To apply, go to the 2020 lottery page at nyrr.org/races/2020tcsnewyorkcitymarathon and click the blue "APPLY" button.
If this is your first time entering the lottery, you'll need to create an account. If you've applied before, you already have one — just log in with your username and password. If you've forgotten your password, there's an option to reset it.
Once you're logged in, you'll see three ways to enter: through the lottery, by invitation from the organization or a sponsor, or through the fundraising option for NYRR Team For Kids. The one we're looking at is the lottery, which is what most people use. Click the blue "APPLY" button again.
To move forward, you need to agree to two conditions: the first says you're applying only once to the lottery. The second says you understand that if your NYRR membership status changes between your application date and the date you're accepted, the charge to your card will reflect your membership status at the time of acceptance. Once you click "I HAVE READ AND AGREE", click "CONTINUE TO CHECKOUT" on the next page.
On the following screen, fill in the options that apply to you:
- Whether the registration is for yourself, your children, or both.
- Your expected finish time.
- Whether you've run a marathon or half marathon not organized by NYRR in the past two years (if yes, include the link to your result).
- Your team (US teams only).
- Your shirt size.
- Whether you're an athlete with a disability.
- A short survey.
Then agree to the race terms and conditions and click "CONTINUE TO CHECKOUT". On the next screen you can make a donation to NYRR if you'd like. You'll also have the option to become an NYRR member or skip that step.
If all your information is complete, click "PROCEED TO CHECKOUT", enter your credit card details, and click "PLACE YOUR ORDER". That's it — you're officially in the lottery draw on February 26.
